 An Arts/Science Film Residency project

Andy Crabb at SAMS (The Scottish Association for Marine Science)

“Òrain na Mara/ Songs of the Scottish Sea”:

Neart na Mara / The Power of the Sea

Biadh na Mara / The Food of The Sea

Slàinte na Mara / The Health of the Sea

Cumadh na Mara / The Shape of the Sea

The filmmaker will work alongside marine scientists, professional divers and musicians Chris Stout & Catriona McKay to create 4 short wordless films taking the audience on an inventive and experimental journey into the Scottish Seas.

Inspired by the experimental documentary cinema of Stewart McAllister and Humphrey Jennings (Listen to Britain) and Dziga Vertov (Man with a Movie Camera) the films will use specially commissioned scores by acclaimed musicians Chris Stout and Catriona McKay and combine marine images and sounds with the scores to create playful, innovative films accessible to an international audience.

The films will use new material together with footage from the SAMS expedition archives, and will incorporate: Under sea footage from the National Facility for Scientific Diving (NFSD), dark-field microscopy, and animation.

In addition the filmmaker will work with students/pupils from four different strata of the educational spectrum: PhD, Undergraduate, High School, and Primary to produce 4 Web-based documentaries providing, in an inspiring and accessible format, the marine science background to the themes of the wordless films. Voice over in multiple languages will ensure international accessibility.
